Of Running and Marathons

Taking a break from stocks and investments it has been running and the Mumbai marathon that has been the all -consuming activity for this past month.  And now it’s over…Part of me is already missing the intensity, energy and focus of the preparation leading to the event.

I don’t want to talk about how I did at the Marathon (read that to say that I ran badly, else ofcourse I would talk about it!), so really I don’t want to rehash THE RUN but this is more about the year to come.

Coming from a background where year ends always means plans, budgets, expectations and projections for the coming year how can running and marathons escape that list!  I wonder if it will help if I have a fitness goal in mind before the fiscal year starts…Fiscal years should have nothing to do with Fitness except fiscal fitness which this country is miles away from (pun intended), but let me do it anyway.

I have been running on and off for the past 14 months with a Mumbai based running group call Striders.  So, this is a bunch of highly motivated and mad people (both the trainers and the runners) and I often wonder what I am doing with them.  And this comes from a person who loves to exercise and likes to get up early, still at times I feel that they talk in a foreign language when they obsess over speed, mileage those are some words which I understand the rest is at times downright bizarre at 6.00 am in the morning.  But overall the experience has been wonderful.  For they are a bunch of encouraging warm and fantastic people and I can’t think of a better way to start a day!

Prior to running with Striders I had never run – I was a gym junkie – aerobics, step, zumba, weight training, functional, yoga – were words that played a huge part of my life but never running – so I am still very new to it and I aspire to run fast.  Fast is to be understood in the context of the speed I run at present, which is more like a fast jog, so what I should say is faster and fast.  And this desire is without any reason or goal.  It’s a goal but not a goal in terms of wanting to finish the marathon in a certain time or anything like that, nor does it have any fitness connotation – I just want to run fast, full stop.

Th good thing of running with Striders is that TCS smiles on Striders – and why is this important?  TCS is primary sponsor of both Amsterdam and from 2014 the prestigious New York Marathon and this just makes it easier for anyone running with Striders to take part in these Marathons.  TCS takes good care of us and helps us in many ways…so I want to run the Amsterdam Marathon …again I don’t see myself zipping around the country or the world participating in Marathons all over but this desire stems more from the fact that I like Amsterdam as a city (imagine partying in Amsterdam with this mad bunch of Striders post the marathon, that in itself should be reason enough!) overall I think it will be a great experience.

For the past two decades I have spent most of my vacation time trekking in the Himalayas, walking has become synonymous to meditation.  I want my running to become that.  I want to able to shut out the noise (in the mind) and just run…Not get affected by the number of people running around, the weather or any other thing.  I want to be Zen.  That’s my biggest aspiration – I want to be in the zone where it is only and only about running your best and to be focused on just that and everything to do with it.  The breathing, the striding and the rhythm that’s all that should matter.  On some Sundays I have visited that place and it is terribly liberating so I want more of that.  I don’t know how to get there but I think its worth trying to get there.

Hopefully through the year I will have the honesty and integrity to share my experience and success or failure with the above…if anyone has anything to share, contribute, suggest please do write in.
